Every few months, an AI CEO publishes a long warning about the risks of AI, and the internet reacts the way it reacts to everything now: with hot takes, quote cards, and a brief, performative moral panic before everyone goes back to shipping features.
This one landed differently.
Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, published a roughly 19,000-word essay called “The Adolescence of Technology,” and it wasn’t just another “we should be careful” blog post. It read like someone trying to yank the steering wheel while the car is still accelerating. In the mainstream coverage, the headline version was blunt: wake up, the risks are close, and society is not ready.
What makes this story worth a real Chatbots Behaving Badly article isn’t that a CEO warned about AI risk. That’s practically a genre. The story is that the warning is being mainstreamed as a cultural event, not treated as niche “alignment discourse.” It’s getting turned into digestible quotes, neat summaries, and respectable dinner-party conversation. And that should make you nervous for two different reasons.

If you’re Anthropic, you want to be the company associated with caution, guardrails, and grown-up supervision, especially while the market rewards whoever ships the most jaw-dropping demo. A public safety manifesto does two jobs at once. It warns. It differentiates.

If the industry wants credibility, the test isn’t how many warnings it publishes. The test is what it accepts as constraints when those constraints hurt growth.
The adolescence metaphor is cute. The incentives are not.
